Our Patron – Professor Donald R Marshall AM

Involved with Interplast since its establishment in 1983, Professor Donald R Marshall AM is Interplast’s past president of 16 years and inaugural patron.

A retired plastic surgeon with over 40 years’ experience, his reputable clout in the industry is celebrated through the awarding of the distinguished Prince Henry’s medal for his outstanding contribution to the field of plastic surgery. Professor Marshall has also been awarded the Medal and International Medal of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and, in 1999, was made a Member of the Order of Australia.

Having been appointed Head of Plastic Surgery at Prince Henry’s Hospital and later Monash Medical Centre, where he established the training program in plastic surgery, Professor Marshall’s achievements extended into education, where he adopted the role of Associate Professor of Surgery at Monash University. His contribution to head and neck cancer surgery repair and breast reconstruction following mastectomy, in particular, has seen him widely cited, published and respected.

Now performing medico-legal duties, his active and passionate dedication to Interplast is exemplified by Gaspare Tagliacozzi in 1589 when he wrote: “We restore, repair, and make whole those parts…which nature has given but which fortune has taken away, not so much that they may delight the eye but that they may buoy up the spirit and help the mind of the afflicted.” According to Professor Marshall, it’s as true today as it was then.

The incredible contribution made by Professor Marshall continues to be recognised by Interplast through the annual Marshall International Scholarship.
