All of Interplast’s programs have the end-goal of building local capacity – and hopefully, one day ‘doing ourselves out of a job’. In Bangladesh, where Interplast has been delivering programs since 2004, the Dhaka Medical College & Hospital is now delivering its own Microsurgery Training Program, following a number of years of Interplast support setting up this sub-specialty in Bangladesh. The Microsurgery Training Program includes a basic course, an advanced course and a refresher course, all held over two days. The course is locally run and funded, with advisory support from a number of international surgeons, including Interplast volunteers.

Interplast volunteer surgeon and Bangladesh Country Coordinator Russell Corlett recently returned to Dhaka for a week, joined by Professor Steve Morris from Canada, nurse educator Jan Rice and hand therapist Karen Fitt. The team delivered a busy and multi-faceted training program, which included perforator flap training for the surgeons, wound management education for the nurses, and workshops for the local allied health practitioners.
